We took a ride to Brewster, NY and back! 100 miles, 130 for some.  We're already talking about making this an annual thing! Thanks so much to @jess.birch for planning and leading this ride! Check out our journey below and our events calendar for upcoming rides!

  • Redbeard Ride to River Road

Today we get the rain out of the way -- tomorrow we ride! Redbeard ride leaves at 7:30 AM! We will go up the West Side/Riverside, over
the GWB, and up River Road (through the lovely woods) to the Ranger Station. We'll return via 9W.

Ride with us! Together we go farther!

  • What You Missed This Weekend!

The Redbeard Bikes crew had so much fun on the road this weekend. We were lucky to have empty-ish roads due to the Labor Day weekend and mostly respectful drivers.

On Saturday morning we rode to the sea to show our solidarity with the Afghan Women's Cycling Team! We were one of many solidarity rides held around the world on this day.

We rode from DUMBO to the end of the Coney Island Boardwalk and back again -- 25 miles all told. Eva, Claudia, Anna, Guy, Diego, Andrei -- loved riding with you! So happy we made it before 10 AM so we could ride on the Boardwalk.

On Friday, 9/19, Redbeard Bikes will host a book launch for Shannon Galpin, author of Mountain2Mountain, producer of Afghan Cycles, and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Shannon was key in creating the Afghan Women's Cycling Team and securing sponsorship from Liv/Giant!

Stay tuned for the invite...meantime, watch the Afghan Cycles trailer and this great interview with Shannon.

On Sunday morning, we rode over the George Washington Bridge and up River Road to the Ranger Station. We returned via 9W. We were lucky to have an overcast sky most of the way. No rain. We just kept our eyes on the hills! Thanks to Brendan, Rich, Charly, and Adam for the good spirits all 50 miles.

Meanwhile in Queens...the NYS Track Championships happened at the Kissena Velodrome. We were sad to miss the day of races, but p
hotographer Jesse Lash makes us feel like we were there -- check out the full album. Congratulations to our friend and designer, Ros Knopov, of Kissena, and his teammate Michael Perlberg, who took second and first.

  • This week's rides

We've been quite lucky with weather thus far -- Sundays have been by and large sunny!
But after last Sunday's rain, we realized we should clarify: rain the morning of the ride cancels the ride. That said, if it's just drizzling/looks like it might clear up, come on out! In these cases we may revise the route (i.e. do laps in Prospect Park instead of going up to River Road), but we will ride!
    Upcoming rides:
    • One of our customers, Guy, has organized a ride to Nyack happening this Saturday. Departure at 7:15 AM from DUMBO or 8 AM from Fairway on the Upper West Side. If you'd like to join, please reply to this thread.
    • Our women's ride is this (and every) Thursday, meet at 8:30 PM at Grand Army Plaza.
    • Sunday morning shop ride to River Road, meet at 7:15 AM at the shop.
    • We're planning a special ride for Saturday, August 30th, to support the Afghan Women's National Cycling Team. Stay tuned for details.
Got any fun rides planned? We encourage you to share them.

Looking for rides? Bikenyc is a great resource.
  • Ride with Redbeard!

Ride with Redbeard tomorrow! Before the summer runs out!

Meet us at the shop at 7:15 AM for a 7:30 AM departure. Riders of all levels welcome!

We will ride up the West Side, over the George Washington Bridge and up River Road. We plan to be back at the shop at 11 AM. Those who wish to continue riding, can do so, of course!
  • Off to the (Brompton) races!

BicycleSpace down in DC is hosting the Brompton U.S. Championship in just a few days, July 11-13.

The winner of the U.S. Championship will represent the U.S. in the Brompton World Championship in England in late July.

Other fun categories include: Best Dressed and Fastest Folder.

BicycleSpace is leading a group social ride to the race course. More details & RSVP here.

Anyone from our Brompton crowd traveling down to partake in the festivities? Share your photos on Instagram & Facebook with #busc2014. Tag us, @redbeardbikes!

  • What To Wear? What To Bring?

Earlier this week I wrote about our Sunday morning shop rides here.

You might be thinking, What do I bring? What do I wear?

    We recommend:

    • Helmet
    • Water
    • Sunscreen
    • Comfortable riding clothes. Bike shorts make a world of difference on a long ride. And most cycling jerseys have ample pockets to store your stuff.
    • Two spare tubes. The Redbeard crew always travels with tools, so we'll be able to fix flats on the road, but it's best practice to bring your own tubes.
    • A small snack. I'm a big fan of Honey Stinger energy chews -- easy to eat on the fly!

    ...and what bike?

You can ride any bike you like, but keep in mind that we'll be covering about 40 miles, including hills! Geared bikes are better suited than single speeds, and road bikes with drop bars will probably be more comfortable than flat-bar bikes. That said, if you only have a flat-bar bike, join us anyway, and go as far as you can!

Redbeard cycling jerseys, as well as Gore Bikewear shorts and jerseys, are available the shop. We are always happy to special order if you we don't have your size or style!

  • Sunday Shop Ride

Ride with us this Sunday, 6/22!

Redbeard Bikes 9W shop ride meets at the shop at 7:15 AM. We leave at 7:30 AM sharp.

Our route: Brooklyn Bridge, West Side greenway, GW Bridge, 9W. On previous rides we've gone to the Ranger Station, or the Market, but it really depends on the group!

This is a no-drop ride, which means we'll go at the pace of our slowest rider. We're happy to point out convenient spots to turn around, if you need to head back early.

Bonus points if you wear a Redbeard jersey!
