Notes from the Road: Ronkonkoma & beyond

Mark Wagner shares this ride report!

On Saturday, November 12th, a handful of hearty souls braved the cold north wind to explore new roads deep on Long Island. Meandering through suburbia, they made their way to the rolling north shore, passing Nikola Tesla's laboratory and the ill-fated Shoreham nuclear power plant, and on into farm country. All the great Long Island cash crops were on display: sod, apples, cabbage, pumpkins, buffalo, and more.

After a stop at the Riverhead Diner to refuel and reheat, the group slipped deep into the tree-lined backroads of the Long Island pine barrens. Unfortunately, by this point the cold wind had taken a toll on the pace of the ride, but everyone rallied together to make it back to the Ronkonkoma station with mere minutes to spare before their train home to the city was due to depart.
