  • Helmets, Not Fedoras

A helmet is no fedora. Does yours fit right? Check out tips from Redbeard & others, via Velojoy. This is a good read for both gals and guys.

Speaking of helmets: it's a good idea to replace yours every two to three years. The helmet deteriorates with use; sun and sweat break down the foam. And your helmet naturally takes some abuse in the course of daily life. Here at Redbeard we have lots of light, airy helmets that will keep you cool AND safe this summer. Come on down and try a Kask, Giro, Uvex or POC.

GENERAL INFO ABOUT REDBEARD SUNDAY RIDES:

Every Sunday morning we ride up the West Side, over the GWB, and into Jersey...

As the summer progresses, we'll be increasing our distance, working towards two goals: the NYC Century for Vision Zero on September 13th, and the first ever Redbeard Bear Mountain ride (date TBD). There's still time to sign up for the Century!
Redbeard rides are no-drop rides (unless otherwise indicated) and we welcome riders of all levels. That said, we try to keep a lively pace so that everyone gets a workout...and we return home at a reasonable hour. We usually roll at 12-14 mph on the way to the GWB. Once we cross into Jersey, away from pedestrians and joggers, we try to keep it at 15-17 mph. But, we always play it by ear! Depending on the size of the group and the skill of individual riders, we may split into A and B groups, especially on the way home.

You are always welcome to cut out early, or split off, if our pace is too slow for you, but if you are riding with us, stick with us! It's more fun. New riders: we won't leave you behind and we'll always make sure you know the way home!

If it's raining the morning of the ride, the ride is cancelled. That said, if it's just drizzling/looks like it might clear up, come on out! In these cases we will probably stay close to home (i.e. do laps in Prospect Park) and/or get breakfast.

Please bring helmet, sunscreen, water, snacks, spare tube & flat fix kit. Rain cancels. RSVP appreciated but not required. Any questions, give us a shout.

    See you on the road!
  • Brompton Urban Challenge: Sunday, 8/16

Save the Date! The Brompton Urban Challenge takes NYC by storm on Sunday, 8/16! This scavenger hunt + photography competition is open to all bikes, as long as one person on your team has a Brompton! Registration is live.

Calling all Bromptoneers, here is your chance to take on the Brompton Urban Challenge! The Brompton Urban Challenge is an event that will test your skill, creativity and ingenuity through a variety of fun and exciting challenges throughout the streets of New York City.

The inaugural New York City Brompton Urban Challenge is set to be a whole lot of fun. We are very excited to invite you to the Brompton Cafe to share a coffee and a donut before sending you out armed with bicycles, clues, and cameras to get creative.

The two-wheeled scavenger hunt is open to all bicycles, but each team must feature at least one Brompton. There will be a limited number of Brompton bikes available to borrow for the day, so please indicate your interest at the time of registration. Also, the event will coincide with the city's Summer Streets initiative, so there's no excuse for not getting involved!
